PGC-1α in atherogenesis
Peroxisome proliferative activated receptor, gamma, coactivator 1 alpha (PGC-1α) is a master regulator of mitochondrial function and it plays crucial roles in glucose, lipid, and energy homeostasis (Lin, 2005). We generated whole-body ApoE-/- PGC-1α-/- double-knockout mice to study the effect of PGC-1α deletion in atherosclerosis. Surprisingly, we did not observe any difference in atherosclerosis development (Stein, 2010a). However, these mice display a markedly reduced total body and visceral fat weight, which may explain why they did not develop more atherosclerotic plaques (Stein, 2010a).
